The causative agent of the disease is the fungus Chaetoconis polygoni, a pathogen that typically affects members of the Polygonaceae family. This fungus acts as a parasite on the host's foliage, disrupting its ability to perform photosynthesis efficiently. It is classified within the mitosporic fungi group and is known for its ability to produce distinctive pycnidia structures on the host tissue.
The primary host for this pathogen is buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum), although it can also infect various species of wild knotweed (Polygonum). The disease manifests primarily on leaves and stems. Under favorable conditions, the fungus can progress rapidly, causing extensive necrotic patches that compromise the structural integrity and health of the entire plant canopy.
The symptoms of the infection appear as localized lesions on the leaves, which typically start as small chlorotic spots before turning brown or greyish-black. As the disease progresses, these spots may coalesce. The most diagnostic sign is the appearance of tiny, dark pycnidia clustered within the necrotic tissue, which serve as the reproductive structures for the fungus to spread further.
Development and spread of the pathogen are highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. Rain splash and wind are the primary vectors for transporting spores from infected debris to healthy plant leaves. The fungus persists throughout the winter in the soil and on crop residues, ensuring that it remains an active threat for the following growing season.
To effectively manage the disease, integrated pest management practices are essential. Key strategies include:
- crop rotation to reduce soil-borne inoculum;
- deep tillage to bury infected stubble;
- the use of certified disease-free seeds;
