Chaetomium strumarium

Chaetomium strumarium is an ascomycete fungus recognized as a significant phytopathogen that causes various fungal diseases in agricultural plants. While often existing as a saprotroph, it can become an opportunistic parasite, particularly under environmental stress, invading the tissues of both seedlings and mature plants.

The host range of this pathogen is quite broad, affecting major field crops such as wheat, corn, and several oilseeds, as well as plants grown in greenhouse conditions. In many cases, it attacks seeds, significantly reducing their germination rates and causing seed rot before emergence, which negatively impacts plant population density.

The symptoms of the disease are characterized by the development of necrotic spots on foliage and stems, often initially appearing as brown or greyish discolorations. As the fungus matures, it produces distinct fruiting bodies (perithecia), which appear as small, dark, hair-like structures on the infected surface, eventually leading to tissue collapse and wilting.

The development and spread of Chaetomium strumarium are largely dependent on high humidity and stable, moderate temperatures, typically between 20°C and 25°C. Poor ventilation in greenhouses or high plant density in fields acts as a catalyst for the rapid spread of spores via wind or water droplets, making early identification critical for management.

Integrated pest management strategies are essential to minimize crop losses caused by this fungus. Recommended protection measures include:

• Treating seeds with high-quality fungicides to prevent initial infection.
• Ensuring proper field drainage and adequate spacing between plants to improve airflow.
• Implementing strict crop rotation to disrupt the survival cycle of the pathogen.
• Applying preventive fungicide sprays if climatic conditions favor fungal growth.
• Maintaining balanced plant nutrition to boost inherent resistance against fungal invasion.
