Description
The disease is caused by the fungus Chaetophoma quercifolia, which is classified within the group of mitosporic fungi. This pathogen primarily targets the foliage of oak species, disrupting the photosynthesis process and resulting in localized tissue necrosis on the leaves, which significantly impacts the tree's health.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are various oak species (Quercus spp.), particularly the pedunculate oak. The fungus is commonly found in densely planted forest stands, nurseries, and public parklands where the microclimate provides sufficient moisture and shade for the development of fungal colonies.
The primary symptoms manifest as necrotic leaf spots. These spots typically display a greyish or brownish coloration and are often bordered by a distinct darker margin. On the underside of the leaf, within the necrotic areas, the fungus produces minute, dark fruiting bodies known as pycnidia, which serve as the dispersal units for fungal spores.
The spread of this pathogen is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. Rainy summer periods are ideal for the release and transmission of spores via wind and splashing water droplets. Consequently, the infection can spread rapidly throughout the canopy of an infested tree.
The economic and ecological impact of this disease lies in premature defoliation. When trees lose their leaves early in the season, they are unable to accumulate necessary nutrients, leading to reduced winter hardiness and weakened resistance to other pathogens or insect attacks, which may eventually lead to stand decline.
