Chaetosphaeria is a genus of fungi within the class Sordariomycetes. While many species are known as wood-decaying saprotrophs, certain types act as plant pathogens, colonizing living or weakened tissues of trees, shrubs, and various herbaceous plants, leading to necrotic spots and tissue degradation.
The disease is classified as a fungal infection. The pathogen primarily affects plant parts by infiltrating the vascular system or surface tissues, where it establishes mycelial networks. These networks consume plant nutrients and produce enzymes that break down cell walls, causing localized dieback.
Targeted crops include fruit trees, ornamental plants, and forestry species. Common symptoms include darkened, velvety, or necrotic lesions on bark and leaves. If left untreated, the pathogen can cause branch dieback, premature leaf drop, and overall physiological stress, which significantly impacts plant health and yield.
Development and spread of Chaetosphaeria are driven by high humidity, poor air circulation, and moisture retention on plant surfaces. The infection cycle is typically triggered during periods of cool, wet weather, as these conditions are optimal for spore germination and colonization of new host tissues.
