Description
The order Chaetosphaeriales consists of ascomycetous fungi that occupy various ecological niches. In agricultural settings, while many species act as decomposers of organic matter, some members of this group are recognized as opportunistic pathogens capable of colonizing living plant tissues, particularly in wood and perennial stems.
The disease type caused by these fungi is typically classified as wood decay or necrotic lesions. The pathogen infects the host through wounds, pruning cuts, or natural openings in the bark. Once inside, the fungus secretes enzymes that break down lignin and cellulose, compromising the structural integrity of the plant's vascular system.
These pathogens predominantly affect woody plants, including orchards, vineyards, and forest species. Younger plants or those weakened by environmental stress, drought, or nutrient deficiency are significantly more susceptible to infection by these fungal agents compared to vigorous, healthy specimens.
Primary symptoms of the infection involve dark discoloration of the wood, sunken lesions on branches or trunks, and the presence of small, dark perithecia on the surface of affected bark. Foliar symptoms often follow, including wilting, chlorosis, and reduced overall plant vitality, leading to dieback of limbs or complete plant death if untreated.
Development and spread of the disease are highly favored by high humidity and moderate temperatures, which facilitate the production and dispersal of spores. To prevent and manage infestations, farmers should prioritize strict sanitation practices. This includes the removal of dead or decaying wood, disinfecting pruning tools to prevent cross-contamination, and applying protective fungicides to all large pruning wounds to block fungal entry points.
