Chaetosphaeronema infection is a fungal disease caused by various species of the Chaetosphaeronema genus. This pathogen is typically categorized among mitosporic fungi that induce localized necrosis on plant tissues. It functions primarily as a necrotroph, causing damage to the host by secreting enzymes that break down plant cell walls and lead to the degradation of affected tissues.
A wide range of plant hosts, including ornamental shrubs, deciduous trees, and some herbaceous species, are susceptible to this pathogen. The fungus thrives particularly well on weakened plants, frequently entering through natural openings or tissue lesions caused by frost, mechanical damage, or insect activity. Consequently, it is often considered an opportunistic pathogen in stressed environments.
Key symptoms include the appearance of irregular or circular leaf spots, which often develop a distinct necrotic center.
