Chaetosphaeronema hispidulum is a fungal pathogen classified within the group of Coelomycetes. It is primarily known as a causal agent of bark necrosis and twig blight in various woody plants. While it often acts as a saprophyte on dead tissue, it can become an opportunistic parasite when host trees are subjected to environmental stress.
This pathogen mainly targets orchard crops, particularly species within the Rosaceae family. Observations have shown that apple trees and other related pomaceous crops are susceptible to colonization, especially when the bark has been damaged by winter injuries, sunscald, or improper pruning practices.
Symptoms of the infection typically appear as localized brown to necrotic lesions on the bark. Over time, these areas become sunken, and small, bristle-like structures, which are the fungal pycnidia, erupt through the bark surface. These structures serve as the primary source of inoculum, releasing conidia that spread the disease under favorable weather conditions.
Development and disease spread are heavily influenced by high humidity and moisture. Periods of rainy weather, particularly during the spring and autumn months, facilitate the germination of spores and their penetration into the host plant tissues. Insufficient sanitation in the orchard often leads to a rapid increase in the disease incidence.
Management of this disease requires a multifaceted approach focused on preventing infections and eradicating active lesions. Key strategies include the surgical removal of infected branches, the application of protective wound dressings to cuts, and the use of copper-based fungicides to inhibit sporulation. Maintaining tree vigor through balanced fertilization and proper irrigation is also essential to reduce host susceptibility.
