Description
Chaetothyriaceae is a family of fungi belonging to the Dothideomycetes class. In agriculture, these fungi are recognized as major agents responsible for the formation of sooty molds on the surface of plants. They primarily exist as epiphytes, colonizing plant surfaces by feeding on honeydew secreted by sap-sucking insects, although some species can exert secondary effects on plant health.
These fungi impact a wide variety of plant species, particularly in regions characterized by warm, humid environments. Major hosts include citrus trees, pome fruits like apples and pears, as well as various ornamental plants and vineyards. The infection is typically confined to the aerial parts of the plant, including leaves, stems, and fruits, where the fungal mycelium establishes itself.
The primary symptom is the development of a dark, velvety, soot-like coating on the foliage and fruit surface. In the early stages, this film can be wiped off, but it becomes more persistent as the colony matures. Significant buildup of this mold blocks sunlight, hindering photosynthesis, reducing the plant's vigor, and severely degrading the market value of the harvested produce.
The development of Chaetothyriaceae is directly correlated with environmental humidity and poor air circulation. However, the most critical factor is the presence of insect pests such as aphids, scale insects, or whiteflies. The sugary honeydew produced by these insects acts as a primary nutrient source for the fungi, facilitating rapid growth and spreading of the mold across the plant canopy.
Management strategies focus on preventing the conditions that favor fungal growth and controlling the insect populations that facilitate infection. Key practices include
