The order Chaetothyriales comprises a diverse group of ascomycete fungi that are frequently encountered in agriculture as the causative agents of sooty mold. These fungi are typically epiphytic, meaning they live on the surface of plant tissues rather than invading the internal plant structures directly, often colonizing leaves, stems, and fruits.

These pathogens primarily affect fruit trees and ornamental shrubs, including citrus, apple, and pear trees, as well as grapevines. Their presence is closely linked to the activity of sap-sucking insects such as aphids, scale insects, and whiteflies, which secrete honeydew — a sugary substance that serves as the perfect growth medium for these fungi.

The primary symptom of a Chaetothyriales infection is the development of a dark, soot-like film on the plant surface. While this layer can often be wiped off, it significantly impairs the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis by blocking sunlight. Prolonged coverage can lead to leaf yellowing, stunted growth, and reduced yield quality.

The development of these fungi is favored by high humidity and moderate temperatures, conditions often found in poorly ventilated or overcrowded orchard settings. The presence of insect colonies provides a continuous supply of nutrients, allowing the fungal population to expand rapidly across the canopy and fruit surface.

Effective management focuses on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies to control the insect populations responsible for honeydew production. Cultural practices, such as proper pruning to improve airflow and reduce humidity within the canopy, are essential. In severe cases, copper-based fungicides can be used to mitigate the fungal growth on the plant surfaces.
