Description
Sooty mold of citrus is a fungal condition primarily caused by Chaetothyrium guaraniticum, a species belonging to the order Capnodiales. This pathogen manifests as a dark, soot-like film on the surface of leaves, stems, and fruits. Unlike many plant pathogens, it does not penetrate plant tissues but acts as an external nuisance that disrupts vital physiological processes.
The disease affects a variety of citrus species including lemons, oranges, and limes. It is prevalent in regions with high humidity and warm temperatures, which facilitate the rapid growth of the fungus. Because it thrives on the sugary secretions of sap-sucking insects, it is essentially a secondary indicator of pest infestation.
Symptoms are easily identifiable by the presence of a black or dark-brown velvety layer. This layer can be wiped off manually, which distinguishes it from many other plant pathogens that cause necrotic tissue changes. If left untreated, the mold layer can become thick and crusty, covering large areas of the foliage and hindering gas exchange and light absorption.
The development and spread of Chaetothyrium guaraniticum are heavily dependent on honeydew, a sticky substance secreted by insects such as aphids, whiteflies, and scale insects. When these pests are present, the fungus colonizes the honeydew-coated leaves. Poor pruning practices that lead to dense, stagnant air in the canopy further exacerbate the spread of the mold.
