Chaetothyrium javanicum is a fungal pathogen responsible for the development of sooty mold, a common condition affecting citrus trees globally. Unlike many other plant diseases, this fungus does not invade plant cells but grows superficially on the surfaces of leaves, twigs, and fruits, creating a dark, soot-like coating.
The host range is primarily limited to citrus species, including oranges, lemons, and mandarins. The fungus thrives in environments where sap-sucking insects, such as whiteflies, scale insects, and aphids, are present. These insects excrete honeydew, a sugary substance that provides the essential nutrients required for the fungal growth.
Symptoms of the infection include a distinct black, powdery or crusty layer covering the canopy. While the mycelium can be physically removed, the underlying tissue often exhibits signs of chlorosis or necrosis due to the suppression of photosynthesis and reduced gas exchange caused by the opaque fungal mat.
Development and spread are heavily dependent on climatic conditions, specifically high humidity and ambient temperatures. Poor air circulation within the orchard, often caused by inadequate pruning or dense canopy structures, significantly increases the risk of rapid colonization and spread of spores between individual trees.
The economic impact of Chaetothyrium javanicum is significant, primarily due to the depreciation of fruit quality. Affected fruit often requires intensive cleaning or may be rejected from fresh market sales. Furthermore, persistent infestations weaken the tree, resulting in stunted growth, leaf senescence, and reduced overall fruit production.
