Description

Chalara is a genus of fungi containing several pathogenic species that cause severe diseases in various plant species. The most economically devastating member is Chalara fraxinea, which is responsible for ash dieback. This disease affects the vascular system and cambium, causing progressive necrosis of branches and the main trunk, which often leads to the death of the entire plant.

Classified as a vascular mycosis and bark necrosis, the pathogen infects the host through bark fissures or natural openings. Once inside, the fungus colonizes the xylem, producing toxins that disrupt water and nutrient transport. This systemic disruption leads to wilting, foliage drop, and the eventual decay of woody tissues.

The primary clinical signs of Chalara infection include necrotic lesions on the bark, shoot dieback, and discoloration of the wood visible upon cutting. In severe cases, the crown of the tree starts to thin, and epicormic shoots (water sprouts) may grow from the stem as a stress response to the severe impairment of the vascular system.

Key measures include the removal and proper disposal of infected biomass, sanitizing tools between uses, and implementing strict quarantine measures for seedlings. Long-term protection focuses on identifying and breeding disease-resistant genotypes to ensure the survival of vulnerable plant populations.
