Description

Chalaropsis is a genus of fungi responsible for causing severe rot diseases in various plant species. The most notable pathogen, Chalaropsis thielavioides, is a soil-borne fungus that significantly impacts tree nurseries and stored root vegetables, leading to physiological disruption and tissue necrosis.

The fungus thrives in moist, poorly aerated conditions, which facilitate the germination of its spores. Once it enters the plant through wounds or natural openings in the roots, the pathogen colonizes the vascular tissue. This colonization restricts water and nutrient uptake, eventually causing the plant to wilt and die.

Host plants include a variety of woody species, particularly walnuts, as well as common root vegetables like carrots and beets. In nursery settings, it causes "black root" disease, which can devastate entire batches of young seedlings, making it a critical concern for forest and orchard managers.

Key symptoms of an infection include:

  • Dark, discolored lesions on roots and root collars.
  • Development of a grey or olive-colored fungal mat on affected surfaces.
  • Stunted growth of the plant foliage.
  • Soft, watery rot in stored vegetables that spreads rapidly through crates.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Prevention involves maintaining optimal soil drainage, careful handling during harvest to prevent wounding, and ensuring rigorous sanitation in storage facilities. Chemical control measures, such as soil fumigation or the application of appropriate fungicides, are recommended when high inoculum levels are detected.
