Chattonella (lat. Chattonella) is a genus of marine raphidophyte algae that represents a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems and the global aquaculture industry. While not a plant disease in the traditional agricultural sense, it acts as a lethal pathogen to aquatic livestock, causing severe economic and environmental damage.

The causative agents are unicellular flagellates capable of rapid, bloom-forming proliferation. They release potent neurotoxins and cause physical damage to the gill lamellae of fish, leading to asphyxiation, osmotic stress, and subsequent mass mortality of fish populations in marine cages.

This organism primarily affects marine and euryhaline fish in coastal zones. Cultured species, including salmon, yellowtail, and sea bream, are particularly susceptible to these blooms, which can wipe out an entire farm's stock within a few hours of exposure.

The main symptoms of a bloom include a distinctive brownish or yellowish discoloration of the water, often referred to as a "red tide". Observable signs in fish include gasping at the water surface, loss of equilibrium, and significant physical damage to the gills, followed by rapid mass mortality events.

Outbreaks are driven by optimal water temperatures and high nutrient loading (eutrophication). Protection strategies focus on:

  • Real-time monitoring of cell density in coastal waters.
  • Relocating sea cages to deeper, unaffected waters.
  • Using clay flocculation to precipitate algae out of the water column.
  • Adjusting feeding schedules to reduce stress during bloom events.
