Cheimonophyllum candidissimum is a species of wood-decaying fungus belonging to the family Mycenaceae. While primarily recognized as a saprotrophic organism that breaks down dead wood in forest ecosystems, in agricultural settings, its presence on live trees acts as a secondary indicator of severe tree decline or stress, often colonizing damaged heartwood or necrotic bark tissues.
The pathogen is a basidiomycete that thrives on the degradation of plant cell walls. It primarily affects deciduous tree species, although in poorly maintained orchards, it can settle on weakened fruit trees. The fungus penetrates the tree structure through mechanical wounds, frost cracks, or sunscald areas, gradually spreading into the deeper layers of the xylem.
The symptoms of colonization include the emergence of small, delicate, white, fan-shaped fruiting bodies directly on the bark surface. These structures appear after periods of high humidity and rainfall. Internally, the wood begins to exhibit signs of white rot, where the structure becomes spongy and loses its structural rigidity, leading to the eventual dieback of limbs.
Development and spread are facilitated by environmental conditions characterized by high humidity, poor air circulation, and excess shade. The fungus spreads via spores carried by wind and rain splashes. Once the spores land on an open wound or a weakened section of the tree, the mycelium begins to grow, especially in areas where the protective layer of the bark is broken.
Damage caused by this fungus can be significant over time, as it weakens the tree's architecture, making it susceptible to mechanical damage from wind and heavy precipitation. Preventive measures involve regular orchard sanitation, such as removing dead branches, painting pruning cuts with protective fungicides or sealants, and ensuring optimal tree health through proper fertilization and pest control.
