Description
Tomato Chino is a devastating viral disease caused by geminiviruses, specifically those within the Tomato leaf curl virus complex. It is characterized by severe stunted growth and leaf distortion, significantly impacting the productivity of Solanaceous crops in tropical and subtropical regions.
The disease is transmitted in a persistent manner by the tobacco whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). Once the whitefly acquires the virus, it remains infectious for the rest of its life, effectively spreading the pathogen from infected reservoir plants to healthy crops within the field.
The host range includes various plants, with tomatoes being the most susceptible. Furthermore, Sweet Pepper plants are also frequently affected, suffering from similar physiological disturbances that limit nutrient flow and result in complete crop failure if management is neglected.
Symptoms typically manifest as pronounced upward curling of the leaflets, interveinal chlorosis, and the development of a bushy appearance due to shortened internodes. Affected plants stop developing properly, and any fruit produced is usually small, misshapen, and commercially non-viable.
Management strategies require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to be successful. This includes the use of virus-resistant cultivars, rigorous control of the whitefly population using biological or chemical insecticides, and the eradication of weed hosts that harbor the virus. Implementing physical barriers like insect-proof netting in greenhouses is a proven strategy for high-value vegetable production.
