Chionosphaeraceae is a family of basidiomycetous fungi within the order Microbotryales. In an agricultural context, these organisms are recognized as opportunistic or specialized pathogens that can affect various plant species, particularly when plants are stressed or growing in environments with high humidity and specific temperature profiles.

The causative agents are microscopic fungi that reproduce via spores, which are easily transported by wind or moisture. Unlike highly aggressive necrotrophs, these fungi often initiate infection through small wounds or natural openings on plant surfaces. Once inside, they proliferate, drawing nutrients from the host tissues and causing localized decay.

Symptoms of infestation often include necrosis of leaves or stems, abnormal discoloration, and the development of a white, powder-like fungal growth on the surface. This includes strict sanitation, such as the removal of infected plant debris, and maintaining good crop hygiene to reduce inoculum sources. If an outbreak occurs, the application of appropriate fungicides, combined with improving air circulation through pruning or thinning, is the most effective approach.
