Chlorociboria is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Helotiales, known primarily for causing a distinct blue-green discoloration in various types of wood. While often considered a saprophyte, in an agricultural and forestry context, it serves as an indicator of wood degradation, impacting the economic value of timber from deciduous species.

This fungus typically attacks broad-leaved trees such as oaks, beeches, and alders. The hyphae of the fungus penetrate the wood fibers and secrete a pigment called xylindein. This pigment creates the characteristic bright turquoise or green tint, which has historically been sought after for specialized woodworking but indicates structural decay.

The primary clinical signs of infestation include the appearance of small, cup-shaped fruiting bodies that are vivid blue-green in color on the bark or wood surface. Inside the timber, the wood undergoes a transformation where it becomes brittle due to the enzymatic breakdown of lignin and cellulose by the fungal mycelium.

The development of Chlorociboria is strongly correlated with moist environments and mild temperatures. Spores are primarily dispersed through the air and land on wounded bark, pruning cuts, or deadfall, where they germinate. High humidity levels are essential for the survival and colonization of the mycelium throughout the host tissue.

The damage caused by this pathogen is significant as it compromises the structural integrity of the wood, rendering it less suitable for heavy-duty construction. Effective management strategies involve maintaining forest hygiene, removing decaying woody debris, and implementing strict moisture control during the seasoning and storage of harvested wood products.
