Description
The green elfcup is a wood-staining fungus that belongs to the Helotiaceae family. In forestry and agronomic contexts, it is recognized as an agent that penetrates wood fibers and deposits a unique green pigment known as xylindein, which alters the aesthetic properties of the host material.
This fungus primarily infects deciduous tree species, including oak, beech, birch, and aspen. It is most commonly found in fallen logs, stumps, and dead standing timber, where it colonizes the wood and gradually spreads through the cellular structure of the sapwood and heartwood.
The primary symptom of infection is the intense, deep blue-green staining of the wood. This coloration is often permanent and can be seen on cross-sections of infected logs. The fruiting bodies are small, cup-shaped, and bright blue-green, typically appearing on the surface of decaying wood during humid conditions.
Development and spread are favored by high humidity and moderate temperatures. The spores are primarily wind-dispersed, entering the tree through bark fissures, pruning wounds, or areas previously damaged by wood-boring insects. Moisture management is critical to preventing the colonization of susceptible materials.
While the green elfcup does not rapidly decompose structural wood like many other wood-decay fungi, it causes significant economic impact by reducing the quality of timber intended for standard construction. However, the stained wood is highly prized in fine woodworking and veneer production for its unique decorative properties.
Preventive measures focus on forest hygiene, such as the removal of deadwood and infected stumps. Proper storage of harvested timber in well-ventilated, dry areas is essential to inhibit fungal growth. When working with susceptible wood types, applying chemical preservatives can effectively prevent fungal spores from establishing a colony.
