Description
The genus Chlorophyllum consists of saprotrophic fungi that are often misidentified as plant diseases. These organisms are not true pathogens of plants; rather, they play a specific role in the decomposition of organic matter within the soil environment, often appearing in areas rich in decaying nutrients.
As saprotrophs, these fungi primarily feed on dead plant debris, such as leaf litter, wood chips, and organic fertilizers. The most common species, Chlorophyllum molybdites, establishes a complex mycelial network in the topsoil, which serves as a natural recycling system for nutrients within the ecosystem.
Development and spread are facilitated by warm, moist conditions and a high concentration of organic matter in the substrate. They frequently appear in well-fertilized lawns, garden beds, and greenhouses where constant irrigation and organic mulching create a perfect microclimate for mycelium growth during the warmer seasons.
The main signs of presence include the emergence of mushrooms, which often grow in circular patterns known as fairy rings. While they do not infect plants, their presence can indicate soil compaction or poor drainage. In some cases, the dense mycelium may form a hydrophobic layer, preventing water from reaching the roots of nearby ornamental or garden crops.
