The organism is a basidiomycete that thrives by decomposing complex organic compounds. Unlike plant-specific parasites, it colonizes the soil environment, creating a dense network of mycelium. This activity can alter soil chemistry and physically restrict water uptake by plant roots, leading to physiological stress in the affected vegetation.
Commonly affected areas include high-maintenance turf, ornamental flower beds, and commercial greenhouse substrates rich in peat or manure. Plants growing near concentrated colonies of this fungus may exhibit signs of nutrient deficiency and stunted growth due to the aggressive exploitation of the surrounding soil nutrients by the fungal network.
Development and spread are primarily driven by high soil moisture levels and the presence of uncomposted organic fertilizers. The fungus reproduces through airborne spores, which can easily colonize new areas. Warm, humid conditions are optimal for the rapid growth of the fungal mycelium, turning organic-rich soil into a thriving host site.
Effective management requires a combination of sanitation and cultural practices. Proper composting of organic material before application is critical to eliminate dormant spores. In professional settings, improving drainage to prevent waterlogging and periodic removal of mushroom caps before sporulation are standard practices. If the substrate is severely compromised in a greenhouse, full replacement is the most reliable strategy.
