Chloroscypha is a genus of ascomycetous fungi known to cause significant foliage blight in coniferous trees and shrubs. The most prominent species, Chloroscypha juniperina, is recognized as a serious pathogen that specifically targets the health of plants within the Cupressaceae family.

The disease is caused by the pathogenic fungus that colonizes the needles and small twigs of susceptible hosts, such as junipers, cypresses, and thujas. The pathogen acts as a localized parasite, weakening the plant by interrupting photosynthesis and damaging the structural integrity of the foliage tissues.

Symptoms typically begin with the discoloration of needles, which turn from green to a yellow, and eventually to a dark brown or tan color. Over time, the affected foliage becomes brittle and drops prematurely. In moist conditions, small, cup-shaped fruiting bodies, known as apothecia, emerge on the dead needles, signaling the active phase of the fungus.

The development of the disease is highly dependent on humidity and temperature. Cool, wet weather conditions, particularly during spring and autumn, promote the release and spread of spores. These spores are easily disseminated by wind and splashing water, allowing the infection to travel between closely planted trees.
