Description
Chlorospleniaceae is a family of ascomycete fungi that are primarily known for their role as wood-decaying organisms. While they typically act as saprotrophs, colonizing dead wood, their presence often signals physiological stress in nearby living trees or potential vulnerability in damaged plant tissues.
The causal agents are fungi within the order Helotiales. The resulting infection is characterized by the breakdown of wood cellulose and lignin. The most notable symptom is a distinctive, vibrant green or blue-green pigmentation of the wood, caused by the production of xylindein, which serves as a definitive diagnostic marker for this group.
The fungi target a wide range of hardwood species, most notably oak, beech, and alder. Infection typically begins in fallen logs, stumps, or dead branches, but can spread to living trees through pruning wounds, frost cracks, or other mechanical injuries where the heartwood is exposed to the environment.
Development is heavily dependent on microclimatic conditions, specifically high relative humidity and steady moisture levels within the host tissue. Spores are primarily disseminated by wind or by wood-boring insects, which carry the inoculum to new, vulnerable surfaces, facilitating the colonization process in favorable conditions.
The pathogenicity is largely economic, as the blue-green staining degrades the aesthetic and structural quality of timber. Prevention focuses on integrated forest and orchard management: removing infected wood debris, treating major pruning wounds to prevent spore entry, and ensuring adequate tree vigor through proper irrigation and nutrition.
