Description
Choanephora fruit rot is a destructive fungal disease caused by species within the Choanephoraceae family, with Choanephora cucurbitarum being the most common pathogen. It is highly aggressive and often results in rapid decay of blossoms, fruits, and young stems in warm, humid conditions.
This pathogen has a wide host range, primarily affecting cucurbits like squash, cucumbers, and melons, as well as beans and certain solanaceous crops. The disease is particularly problematic in tropical regions and greenhouse environments where high humidity levels are maintained throughout the growing season.
Symptoms typically begin with the development of a fluffy, grayish-white mass of fungal threads on the surface of infected blossoms or fruit. As the infection progresses, the tissues turn into a mushy, watery rot, and the fungal growth becomes covered with black, pinhead-like sporangia.
The spread of the disease is heavily dependent on moisture. Spores are disseminated by splashing rain, irrigation water, and wind currents. Insect activity also plays a significant role in spreading the pathogen from infected floral parts to healthy ones, often leading to rapid outbreaks during wet weather.
Management strategies focus on reducing humidity and minimizing moisture on plant surfaces. Proper plant spacing, increasing air circulation, and utilizing drip irrigation can significantly lower the risk of infection. Fungicides containing copper or specific systemic compounds can be applied preventatively to protect blooms during peak susceptibility periods.
