Description
Chromelosporium is a fungal disease caused by species belonging to the genus Chromelosporium. This pathogen is often associated with the breakdown of decaying plant matter but can act as a secondary parasite, colonizing stressed or wounded plant tissues in greenhouse environments and nurseries.
This pathogen primarily targets a variety of ornamental plants, specific hardwood species, and occasionally vegetables grown under humid conditions. The fungus is highly opportunistic, often attacking plants that have already been weakened by environmental stressors, nutritional imbalances, or insect damage.
The hallmark sign of an infection is the development of a distinct, velvety or powdery growth on the plant surface, typically displaying a light brown, ochre, or yellowish hue. As the infection progresses, the surrounding leaf or stem tissue turns necrotic, eventually drying out and collapsing, which can lead to rapid wilting and premature plant death.
The spread of the fungus is strictly dependent on moisture. High humidity levels (exceeding 85%) and moderate temperatures create an ideal environment for conidial production and dispersal. Spores are easily disseminated by air currents, splashing water, and contaminated gardening tools, making strict hygiene protocols essential in crop management.

- Immediate removal and destruction of infected plant debris.
- Improved ventilation to lower localized humidity.
- Avoiding overhead irrigation to reduce spore transmission.
