Chromelosporium ochraceum is a fungal pathogen responsible for specific necrotic diseases in plants. It acts as an opportunistic parasite, primarily manifesting in greenhouse environments where high humidity levels allow the fungus to transition from a saprophytic state on decaying organic matter to an active pathogenic phase on living plant tissues.
The host range of this pathogen includes a variety of ornamental species and certain horticultural crops. It is particularly dangerous for seedlings and plants under stress, as the fungus quickly exploits any structural weakness or moisture-rich microenvironment to establish itself and proliferate across the leaf or stem surfaces.
The primary symptom of infection is the development of a distinct, ochre-yellow colored mycelial growth on the plant tissue. This surface layer, representing the conidiophores and spores of the fungus, quickly disrupts normal plant cell functions, leading to localized rotting, yellowing, and eventual tissue death if the infection is left unchecked.
