Description

Chromista is a complex biological group that includes the class Oomycetes, which are among the most destructive plant pathogens in modern agriculture. Often referred to as "water molds," these organisms share characteristics with both fungi and algae. Because of their unique cellular structure, they require specific management strategies different from those used for true fungal infections.

These pathogens are responsible for some of the most devastating diseases known to growers worldwide. Key examples include late blight in potatoes and tomatoes, as well as downy mildew on grapes, onions, and various horticultural crops. They are also primary drivers of seed decay, seedling damping-off, and various root rots that affect both nursery and field crops.

Symptoms of an infection typically manifest as lesions or chlorotic spots on leaves, followed by the development of white or grayish, fuzzy mycelial growth, particularly on the underside of the foliage. As the disease progresses, the tissues decay, causing wilting, necrotic patches on fruit, and systemic collapse of the entire plant structure in severe outbreaks.

The spread and development of these pathogens are strictly dependent on environmental moisture. High humidity, heavy rainfall, or poor drainage create the necessary aquatic environment for the production and motility of zoospores. These spores can travel through irrigation water or splashed rain, enabling the pathogen to spread rapidly across fields during periods of wet, mild weather.

Effective management and protection strategies are essential for crop health. Because standard fungicides targeting true fungi are often ineffective, growers must rely on:

  • Integrated pest management (IPM) practices focusing on sanitation.
  • Improvement of soil drainage and plant spacing for better aeration.
  • Rotation of crops to reduce soil-borne inoculum levels.
  • Application of specialized oomycete-targeted fungicides when symptoms first appear.
