Chromocyphella is a genus of fungi belonging to the Inocybaceae family. In an agronomic context, these fungi can act as opportunistic pathogens, developing on weakened plant tissues or debris in humid environments, which may lead to surface lesions and stress in various agricultural and horticultural crops.

The fungus typically affects low-growing plants, particularly those situated in areas with high humidity and poor air circulation. While often found on dead organic matter, under favorable conditions, the mycelium can spread to the lower stems and leaves of living plants, causing visible physical damage to the epidermal layers.

Symptoms of Chromocyphella infestation manifest as small, yellowish-brown, cup-shaped or discoid fruiting bodies attached to the plant surface. The infection area often shows signs of chlorosis, necrosis, and tissue softening, which interferes with the plant’s nutrient transport system and can significantly reduce the overall vigor and yield potential of the crop.

Development and spread are heavily dependent on environmental factors, specifically high moisture levels and stagnant air. The fungus thrives in temperatures between 15°C and 22°C, especially in dense plant canopies where moisture persists for extended periods. Once established, the spores can easily disseminate to neighboring plants through rain splashes or wind currents.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to break the cycle of the disease and minimize favorable conditions. Essential control strategies include:

  • ensuring optimal plant spacing to promote airflow;
  • maintaining good field hygiene by removing plant debris;
  • monitoring moisture levels to prevent waterlogging;
  • utilizing appropriate fungicidal treatments if the infection threatens crop quality or yield.
