In greenhouse settings and hydroponic systems, these organisms thrive on moist surfaces exposed to light, disrupting the health and development of commercial plant crops.

This condition is classified as an algal infestation, which affects plant physiology by coating roots or substrates. The pathogen acts by inhibiting oxygen exchange, reducing the nutrient availability for the plant, and creating a conducive micro-environment for the colonization of harmful bacteria and fungi that cause root rot.

Crops most susceptible to Chromulina include lettuce, cucumbers, and tomatoes grown in hydroponic nutrient films or mineral wool substrates.
