Chromulina ovalis is a species of unicellular golden algae that can act as a significant contaminant in agricultural water systems. In professional agronomy, particularly within controlled environment agriculture (CEA) and hydroponic setups, it is recognized for its ability to form dense blooms that degrade the quality of nutrient solutions.

The organism primarily affects crops grown in hydroponic, aeroponic, or aquaponic systems, including leafy greens, tomatoes, and various herbs. The presence of these algae is rarely lethal on its own, but it creates environmental conditions that favor secondary pathogenic attacks on the root systems of the host plants.

Symptoms of infestation include the rapid development of a greenish or yellowish turbidity in the water tanks and the accumulation of a bio-film on pipes, emitters, and root structures. Plants may exhibit signs of nutrient deficiency, such as stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and wilting, caused by the physical coating of roots by algal cells, which hinders oxygen uptake.

The development of Chromulina ovalis is driven by high light exposure in clear water reservoirs, nutrient-rich water (high N and P levels), and poor water aeration. When these conditions are met, the organism can reach bloom density within days, significantly impacting the redox potential of the nutrient solution and stressing the cultivated plants.

  • Utilizing UV sterilization units to eliminate free-floating algal cells.
