Chromulinaceae, a family of golden-brown algae, can become a serious problem in horticultural environments where they act as opportunistic pathogens or epiphytes. While traditionally seen as aquatic organisms, in agricultural settings like hydroponics or high-humidity greenhouses, these microorganisms can establish themselves on the surface of growing media, affecting the overall health and development of crops.
The primary hosts for these microorganisms are young seedlings and leafy greens, particularly those grown in protected culture systems. The sensitivity of these crops to environmental changes makes them highly susceptible to colonization by algae, especially when the root zone is exposed to light and excess moisture, creating a perfect habitat for Chromulinaceae species to thrive.
Symptoms of an infestation are marked by the appearance of a yellowish or golden slime or crust on the surface of pots, rockwool, or soil. Spores can be spread rapidly throughout a greenhouse via contaminated irrigation water or shared equipment.
The economic impact of Chromulinaceae is mainly linked to reduced crop yield, poor root development, and the potential for secondary infections. Management strategies should prioritize preventative measures such as light-shielding of the root zone, improving drainage, and strictly monitoring nutrient levels. Regular sanitation of irrigation systems and the use of targeted algicides are essential for effective control and prevention of further outbreaks.
