Description
Chroomonas is a genus of unicellular flagellated eukaryotes belonging to the cryptomonad group. While they are not considered traditional plant pathogens that cause necrosis or decay, their proliferation in controlled-environment agriculture can significantly impact crop performance in hydroponic and aquaponic systems.
The biological nature of this organism is a photosynthetic microalga. In agricultural systems, it acts as a competitor for nutrients. When populations explode, they absorb nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium intended for the crop, leading to unintended nutritional imbalances in the aqueous medium.
These organisms primarily affect hydroponic crops, such as lettuce, herbs, and leafy greens grown in DWC (Deep Water Culture) or nutrient film technique systems. The presence of these organisms is largely facilitated by the availability of light, nutrients, and stable warm temperatures within the solution tanks.
Symptoms of an infestation are characterized by the water turning cloudy or changing color. While the plants themselves may not show classic disease symptoms, the reduction in dissolved oxygen caused by algal respiration and decomposition can lead to root browning and reduced nutrient uptake efficiency.
Prevention and protection measures are centered on environmental control. Key strategies include:
- complete light-proofing of all nutrient reservoirs;
- regular cleaning and disinfection of plumbing and tanks;
- installation of UV-C sterilizers in the irrigation loop;
- maintaining strict hygiene standards to prevent the introduction of organic contaminants.
