Chroomonas acuta is a species of unicellular cryptophyte algae that acts as a significant operational challenge in hydroponic and aquaponic plant cultivation. While primarily an environmental microorganism, its presence in nutrient solutions leads to algae blooms that disrupt the delicate balance required for optimal vegetable production.

The primary crops affected by this organism include leafy greens, herbs, and young vegetable seedlings grown in recirculating water systems. Because these systems are designed to provide constant nourishment, the environment inadvertently favors the rapid proliferation of Chroomonas acuta when light and nutrient levels are mismanaged.

Symptoms of infestation are easily identifiable: the nutrient solution turns a distinct murky green, and a slippery, biofilm-like layer coats the roots of the plants. This layer physically blocks root hairs from accessing nutrients and oxygen, which leads to stunted plant development, yellowing of the foliage, and eventual root rot in extreme cases.

Environmental conditions that foster the growth of this algae include direct sunlight exposure on nutrient reservoirs, warm water temperatures exceeding 20°C, and high concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus. These conditions trigger rapid binary fission in the algae, allowing them to spread throughout the irrigation pipes and emitter nozzles of the greenhouse facility.

Effective control measures focus on light exclusion to inhibit photosynthesis within the piping and tanks. Integrated management includes the installation of UV sterilizers, ozone treatment of the nutrient solution, and strict adherence to sanitation protocols. Regular monitoring of water chemistry is essential to prevent the conditions that favor the dominance of Chroomonas acuta.

Biological and chemical preventions are preferred over curative measures once the plants are mature. Keeping the system closed, maintaining proper flow rates to prevent stagnant zones, and regular cleaning cycles are the most reliable strategies for any commercial producer to protect crop yields from algal interference.
