Description

The chrysanthemum foliar nematode (Aphelenchoides ritzemabosi) is a destructive microscopic roundworm responsible for the foliar nematode disease. This parasite invades leaves through stomata, feeding on mesophyll cells. As it feeds, the nematode destroys plant tissues, disrupting nutrient transport and photosynthesis, which significantly weakens the host plant.

This pest has a diverse host range beyond its namesake. It commonly affects ornamental species, but also poses a threat to agricultural crops such as alfalfa (Medicago sativa) and common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). The nematode is primarily spread through contaminated nursery stock, infested soil, gardening tools, and water splash during irrigation.

Key symptoms include the appearance of angular, water-soaked, or chlorotic lesions between the leaf veins. Over time, these spots turn brown or black, eventually drying up and causing the leaves to wither or drop prematurely. On crops like alfalfa and beans, infestation leads to stunted growth, distorted stems, and a reduction in both biomass and overall quality of the yield.

The life cycle of Aphelenchoides ritzemabosi is highly dependent on humidity. Nematodes require a film of water on the plant surface to move and reach the stomata. Consequently, outbreaks are more frequent in environments with poor air circulation or frequent overhead irrigation. The pest survives in dormant stages within dead plant debris, allowing it to persist in the field from one season to the next.

Effective management relies on a multi-pronged approach. Sanitation is the most critical factor, requiring the removal and destruction of all infested plant material. Growers should utilize hot water treatment for propagules to eliminate nematodes before planting. Furthermore, switching to drip irrigation instead of overhead watering, maintaining proper spacing between plants, and practicing long-term crop rotation are essential steps to minimize the population and prevent further spread of this nematode.
