Chrysocapsaceae represents a family of golden algae that can colonize the surfaces of plants, particularly in environments with high humidity. While often considered aquatic organisms, their ability to form slimy layers on plant tissues makes them an issue in agronomy, especially within greenhouse facilities and hydroponic systems.

The causative agent belongs to the chrysophyte group, characterized by their ability to form mucilaginous colonies. This biological phenomenon is typically triggered by excessive moisture, stagnant air, and improper irrigation management. The algae do not always directly kill the plant tissue, but they create a film that severely disrupts normal physiological functions.

Plants affected by this organism include a variety of greenhouse crops, seedlings, and ornamentals. The algae thrive where water remains on leaves or stems for extended periods. Once established, the colony can spread rapidly, colonizing healthy tissues and potentially attracting secondary bacterial or fungal pathogens that utilize the slimy layer as a growth substrate.

Symptoms are easily identifiable by the appearance of a yellow, brown, or golden slimy film on the plant surface. This layer acts as a barrier, blocking sunlight and impeding gas exchange through the stomata. As a result, the plant may exhibit chlorosis, leaf curling, or stunted growth due to the inability to photosynthesize effectively.

Integrated management is essential to combat the spread of these algae. Effective prevention and control strategies include:

  • Improving ventilation to reduce surface moisture;
  • Adjusting irrigation schedules to allow plant surfaces to dry;
  • Sanitizing growing benches and equipment;
  • Using algae-control agents or copper-based treatments when infestations are detected.
