Chrysococcus rufescens is a genus of golden-brown algae (chrysophytes) that is significant in agricultural water management. It is widely recognized as a species capable of forming dense populations in stagnant or slow-moving water sources, often impacting the efficiency of irrigation networks used in commercial farming.

The primary concern regarding this organism is not plant tissue infection, but the mechanical impairment of hydraulic systems. In hydroponic setups or closed-loop irrigation systems, Chrysococcus rufescens produces mucilaginous substances that clog fine filters, emitters, and micro-sprinklers, resulting in inconsistent water delivery to the plants.

Symptoms of an outbreak include the water turning a characteristic brownish-yellow color and the formation of slimy coatings on the interior surfaces of irrigation pipes and tanks. When these biofilms detach, they can block sensitive plant irrigation pathways and encourage the growth of pathogenic bacteria.

Development and spread are triggered by nutrient loading (e.g., nitrogen and phosphorus runoff), temperature stabilization, and exposure to intense lighting. Because Chrysococcus rufescens thrives in high-nutrient environments, water storage containers that are not cleaned regularly become ideal habitats for rapid proliferation.
