The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Chrysomyxa empetri, which belongs to the basidiomycetes class. It is a highly specialized pathogen that induces rust symptoms, primarily targeting plants within the Ericaceae family, leading to chronic infections that weaken the host plant significantly.

The primary host for this pathogen is the black crowberry (Empetrum nigrum). While often found in natural tundra ecosystems, it can also infect garden cultivars and wild collections of Ericaceae if the environmental conditions are favorable for fungal growth and reproduction.

The symptoms are characterized by the appearance of bright orange or yellowish powdery spore pustules on the undersides of the leaves. As the disease progresses, the infected foliage turns yellow, withers, and eventually drops prematurely, causing significant thinning of the plant's canopy and stunted growth.
