Chrysothrix candelaris is a species of crustose lichen that is often misidentified as a disease due to its vibrant yellow, powdery appearance on tree bark. While it is an epiphyte and not a direct pathogen, its extensive colonization is often an indicator of tree stress or environmental conditions favorable for lichen growth.

This lichen is typically found on the bark of various hardwood trees, including apple, pear, oak, and poplar. It prefers substrates with deep fissures and textures that provide stability and moisture retention, allowing it to thrive on older, slower-growing trees.

The primary symptom is a brilliant sulfur-yellow, granular, or powdery crust that forms patches on the trunk and large branches. Unlike some other lichens that form leaf-like structures, this species looks like a fine, dusty coating that remains firmly attached to the bark surface.

Development is heavily influenced by high humidity and shaded conditions. Gardens with poor air circulation, dense canopies, and long periods of moisture are the most common environments where this lichen spreads rapidly across the bark of mature trees.

While Chrysothrix candelaris does not feed on the tree, its presence can be detrimental. The crust creates a microhabitat for various tree-dwelling pests, such as scale insects or mites. Furthermore, thick layers of lichen can impede the bark's ability to undergo gas exchange, potentially slowing down the tree's physiological processes.
