Chytridiaceae is a family of primitive fungi that act as significant plant pathogens in global agriculture. These organisms are distinguished by their motile zoospores, which utilize flagella to navigate through water-saturated soils to locate and infect the root systems of target plants, leading to severe physiological disruptions.

The disease process involves the pathogen penetrating the host tissue, where it develops extensive zoosporangia. As the fungus absorbs nutrients from the host, the plant's ability to uptake water and essential minerals is compromised. This results in stunting, yellowing of leaves, and, if the infection is widespread, total crop failure.

A wide range of crops, particularly vegetables and certain ornamentals, are susceptible to infection by Chytrid fungi.
