Description
Pathogen and disease type. The order Chytridiales comprises a group of primitive fungi that serve as major plant pathogens. Unlike advanced fungi, their life cycle often lacks a true mycelium, instead utilizing zoospores for dispersal. They function as obligate or facultative parasites, inducing significant physiological changes in the host, such as cell hypertrophy and hyperplasia, which lead to tumorous growths and systemic physiological distress.
Host crops. Members of this order affect a wide range of host plants. The most well-documented pathogen is Synchytrium endobioticum, the causative agent of potato wart disease. Other species within the order can infect various vegetable crops, cereals, and ornamental plants, specifically targeting their root systems and subterranean tissues, which can lead to severe agricultural losses.
Symptoms and signs. The primary diagnostic features of a Chytridiales infection are warty outgrowths, galls, or deformed tissues on roots, tubers, or the base of stems. As the infection progresses, these hypertrophic tissues often turn dark and mushy due to the accumulation of sporangia and subsequent bacterial decay. Infected plants typically exhibit stunted growth, chlorosis, and reduced vigor, often leading to total crop failure in susceptible varieties.
Development and dispersal. These pathogens thrive in environments with high soil moisture and moderate temperatures. The infection cycle relies on motile, flagellated zoospores that swim through water films in the soil to reach new hosts. The dispersal of the pathogen is facilitated by contaminated soil, infected planting materials, surface water runoff, and agricultural machinery, which can harbor resting spores that remain viable for decades.
Harmfulness and protection. Chytridiales can cause devastating economic impact due to their persistence in the soil and the difficulty of eradicating them once established. Management strategies include:
- Deployment of resistant cultivars and hybrids;
- Strict adherence to crop rotation cycles to starve the pathogen;
- Rigorous quarantine protocols and inspection of imported planting stock;
- Sanitization of soil and agricultural equipment;
- Improvement of soil drainage to reduce the water films necessary for zoospore motility.
