Chytridium infection is a plant pathology caused by microscopic fungi belonging to the genus Chytridium. These primitive fungi are predominantly aquatic or soil-borne, thriving in environments where water availability is consistently high, allowing their motile zoospores to propagate and infect susceptible hosts.
The pathogen primarily affects the root systems of various plants, including both aquatic species and terrestrial crops grown under conditions of excessive soil moisture. By penetrating the epidermis of roots, the fungus disrupts the plant's ability to absorb essential nutrients and water, eventually compromising its structural integrity.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by root decay, brown lesions on the collar region, and visible chlorosis in the foliage. Affected plants often exhibit signs of wilting even when soil moisture is adequate, indicating a severe failure of the root system to transport water effectively.
Development and spread of the pathogen are highly dependent on the presence of standing water. The motile zoospores utilize flagella to move through water films, reaching new host roots. Therefore, poor drainage and over-irrigation are the primary drivers for outbreaks of this fungal infection in greenhouses and agricultural fields.
Effective management and prevention strategies focus on moisture control and soil health. Key actions include:
