Chytridium olla is a microscopic fungus belonging to the Chytridiomycota phylum. It functions as an obligate parasite that specifically targets microscopic algae in soil and aquatic environments. In agricultural settings, it is often documented as a biological factor that regulates algal populations, which can indirectly influence soil fertility and surface micro-ecology.
The disease type is parasitic, involving the colonization of the host cell. The pathogen forms a specialized vegetative structure that anchors onto the algal cell wall. Through this structure, it absorbs nutrients, eventually causing the host cell to rupture and die, effectively terminating the algal life cycle.
This fungus primarily infects various species of green algae. While it does not directly infect vascular crops, its presence is significant in hydroponic systems, rice paddies, and moist greenhouse soils where algal blooms are common. In these environments, it can act as a natural regulator of unwanted algal growth.
