Ciboria rot is a fungal disease caused by pathogens of the genus Ciboria, which are members of the Sclerotiniaceae family. These fungi are specialized parasites that primarily attack the reproductive parts of plants, including flowers, fruits, and seeds. The disease is known for causing significant yield losses and potential long-term damage to orchard productivity.

The host range of Ciboria typically includes various nut-bearing trees, such as oaks (acorns), as well as stone fruits like cherries and other ornamental species. The pathogen displays high specificity, focusing its developmental cycle on the nutrient-rich reproductive tissues of its host, which it exploits to produce dormant structures called sclerotia.

Early symptoms of infection include the discoloration and wilting of blossoms, which often leads to total blossom blight. On developing fruits, the fungus causes brown rot-like symptoms, eventually leading to the mummification of the tissue. These mummified fruits become hard, shriveled, and often harbor the black, durable sclerotia that allow the fungus to survive through winter.

Disease development is heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and rainfall during the flowering and fruit-setting stages. The pathogen releases ascospores or conidia, which are disseminated by wind and splashing rain. Once these spores land on susceptible host tissue, they germinate rapidly, leading to secondary infection cycles throughout the season.
