Description
Cigar-end rot is a fungal disease affecting bananas, primarily caused by the pathogen Trachysphaera fructigena. The disease is aptly named due to the symptomatic appearance of the banana fruit tip, which becomes covered with a powdery, ash-like fungal growth, resembling the end of a lit cigar. This disease can significantly impact fruit quality and marketability.
The causal agent, Trachysphaera fructigena, is an opportunistic fungus. Infection usually occurs in the field shortly after fruit set, as the fungus colonizes the decaying floral parts that remain attached to the tip of the banana fruit. Once established in these tissues, the mycelium gradually invades the fruit flesh, causing characteristic necrosis.
Symptoms initially appear as a dry, dark rot at the distal end of the fruit. As the infection progresses, the surface becomes covered with a dense, white to gray-brown mass of conidia. Unlike many other types of fruit rot, the infected tissue remains relatively dry and leathery, leading to a stunted and malformed appearance of the banana tip.
The development and spread of Trachysphaera fructigena are favored by high relative humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures. Poor plantation management, such as lack of canopy thinning and inadequate sanitation, creates stagnant microclimates that allow the fungus to thrive and release airborne spores to neighboring fruit.
Economic damage is primarily driven by the rejection of damaged fruit in export markets. Because affected bananas cannot be sold as fresh produce, growers face high losses, especially during wet seasons. Proactive management is essential to minimize the incidence of the disease and protect the long-term viability of the banana crop.
