Cistella is a genus of fungi within the Hyaloscyphaceae family. In agronomic terms, it is recognized as a fungal pathogen responsible for various types of necrosis and rot in plant tissues. While many species within this genus act as saprotrophs, some can opportunistically infect weakened woody plants, acting as secondary pathogens that exacerbate the degradation of bark and xylem.

The disease primarily targets deciduous trees and various shrub species. It is particularly prevalent in orchards where plants have been stressed by environmental factors such as frost, sunburn, or mechanical pruning wounds. These lesions provide a pathway for fungal spores to colonize the interior tissues of the plant, leading to structural damage.

Symptoms of the infection include the appearance of small, distinct, cup-shaped fruiting bodies (apothecia) on the surface of the bark. These are typically white, yellowish, or pale in color and grow in clusters. Affected areas show discoloration, softening of the bark tissue, and localized cell death, which compromises the integrity of the plant's vascular system.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the spread of Cistella. High humidity, consistent rainfall, and moderate temperatures are ideal for the production and dispersal of spores. Poor air circulation in dense tree canopies further promotes the development of the infection, as moisture remains trapped on the surface of the bark for extended periods.

The economic impact of the disease is linked to the loss of tree vigor, decreased productivity, and in severe cases, the death of branches or entire plants. Management strategies focus on sanitation: removing and destroying infected branches, pruning during dry weather to prevent spore spread, and applying fungicidal pastes to fresh wounds to prevent infection entry. Maintaining plant health through proper fertilization and watering is the most effective preventative measure.
