Description

Cistella geelmuydenii is a micro-fungus classified within the order Helotiales. It typically functions as a saprotroph, decomposing organic matter, but it is also recognized as an opportunistic pathogen capable of infecting stressed or weakened plant tissues. Its biological cycle involves the production of minute, disc-shaped apothecia that release spores under favorable environmental conditions.

The host range primarily includes woody plants and shrubs. In agricultural and horticultural settings, it is often found colonizing the bark of branches that have been compromised by mechanical injuries, frost cracks, or pest activity. While rarely a primary killer of healthy trees, it contributes significantly to the decline of weakened specimens by causing localized necrosis of the cambium and bark tissues.

Symptoms of an infection include the appearance of tiny, yellowish or cream-colored fruiting bodies scattered across the surface of the bark. Surrounding these fruiting bodies, the bark may show signs of decay, darkening, and tissue death. As the infection progresses, the transport of water and nutrients within the affected branch is hindered, eventually leading to branch dieback and reduced plant vigor.

Development and dissemination of the pathogen are highly dependent on high moisture levels and stagnant air. The fungus spreads via spores, which are disseminated by rain splash and wind, particularly during cool, damp seasons. Moist, sheltered conditions within the canopy create an ideal environment for the fungus to establish itself and initiate colonization on damaged bark surfaces.

Effective management requires a multi-pronged approach focused on sanitation and plant vigor, including the following measures:

  • Regular pruning to remove dead or infected wood from the plant canopy.
  • Sanitation of pruning tools using alcohol or bleach solutions to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Application of protective wound dressings or sealants to large cuts to prevent entry.
  • Maintenance of tree vigor through appropriate fertilization and irrigation schedules.
  • Monitoring of bark health to detect early signs of fungal colonization during wet periods.
