It is crucial to define that Cladonia is not a plant disease in the phytopathological sense, but rather a genus of lichens. Lichens are epiphytic organisms that use tree bark solely as a substrate for attachment rather than as a source of nutrients.
A lichen is a complex symbiotic association between a fungus and an alga or cyanobacterium. While they do not consume the host plant's sap, their presence often serves as a bioindicator, suggesting that the tree is growing slowly or that the environment has high humidity levels.
Cladonia typically colonizes mature, aging trees with rough bark textures. Fruit trees, including apples and pears, are frequently affected, especially in orchards where the canopy is too dense and lacks proper ventilation or sufficient sunlight exposure.
The visible symptoms include the development of cup-shaped, shrubby, or scale-like structures on the trunk and primary branches. While the lichen itself is harmless, its extensive growth can trap moisture against the bark, creating a microhabitat for potential insect pests and fungal spores.
The primary control measure is regular orchard hygiene. This includes mechanical removal of loose, dead bark, annual pruning to increase airflow, and the application of white lime wash to trunks. Maintaining vigorous tree growth through proper fertilization and watering is the best prevention against excessive lichen colonization.
