From an agronomic perspective, it is critical to clarify that Cladonia rangiferina, commonly known as reindeer lichen or yagel, is not a plant disease. It is a composite organism belonging to the lichen group, consisting of a fungus and an alga living in symbiosis. It does not act as a pathogen and has no mechanism to invade or harm cultivated plants.

The organism does not have a disease-causing agent, as it is a slow-growing lichen that produces its own energy through photosynthesis. Unlike fungal pathogens that cause wilting, spotting, or decay, the reindeer lichen lives independently of host plants. It obtains nutrients from the air and rain, rather than deriving them from crop tissues.

There are no crops susceptible to this lichen. It typically inhabits pristine, low-nutrient environments such as tundra or coniferous forests. In an agricultural setting, its presence is rarely observed on cultivated land, as it cannot survive the standard practices of soil tillage, fertilization, and chemical weed control used in modern farming.

Development conditions for this species are specific: it requires high air quality, stable moisture levels, and minimal disturbance. It is notoriously sensitive to pollutants and synthetic fertilizers. Consequently, reindeer lichen is rarely found in fields where intensive agriculture is practiced, as these environments are chemically hostile to its growth requirements.

The reindeer lichen presents zero economic threat to agriculture. It does not negatively impact crop yields or plant health. Therefore, there are no protection or control measures required. In fact, it is often viewed as a bioindicator of air quality and a beneficial component of soil ecology, rather than a pest or disease to be eradicated.
