Cladophialophorosis is a fungal infection caused by members of the Cladophialophora genus. These pathogens are classified as dematiaceous fungi, which are characterized by their dark pigmentation. In an agricultural context, these fungi are recognized as opportunistic pathogens that can cause necrotic lesions on various woody and perennial plant species, potentially compromising their vascular systems.

The disease is primarily necrotic, affecting both the internal conductive tissues and external surfaces of the plant. The pathogen thrives by colonizing plant tissue, leading to structural damage and the interruption of nutrient transport. Because these fungi can persist in soil and decaying organic debris, they pose a significant threat to long-term crop stability in orchards and nurseries.

Symptoms typically manifest as dark or black discoloration of the foliage, stem lesions, and twig dieback. As the infection progresses, the leaves often exhibit premature wilting and abscission. The growth of the plant is stunted, and in severe cases, the infected parts become brittle and eventually succumb to the advancing necrotic spread caused by the fungal mycelium.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development of the disease. High humidity levels, prolonged moisture on plant surfaces, and poor ventilation are primary drivers for spore germination and spread. The pathogen is frequently disseminated through splashing rain, wind-blown spores, or contact with contaminated tools, making hygienic practices during pruning essential.

Effective management requires an integrated approach that focuses on both prevention and containment. Key measures include:

  • Maintaining proper plant spacing to ensure adequate airflow.
  • Regular pruning and removal of all dead or infected plant tissues.
  • Sterilizing all pruning equipment to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Applying appropriate fungicides at the onset of favorable environmental conditions for fungal growth.
