Description
Cladosporium leaf mold is a widespread fungal disease caused by pathogens belonging to the order Cladosporiales. This pathogen is particularly well-known for affecting plants within protected environments, such as greenhouses. The fungus spreads through asexual spores (conidia) which are easily dispersed by air currents and human activity within the planting area.
While the disease is most famously associated with tomato crops, causing significant yield losses in greenhouse production, it can also infect other Solanaceous plants, cucumbers, and even certain grasses. The pathogen is highly opportunistic, often attacking plants that are stressed by poor growing conditions or improper environmental management.
The symptoms typically begin on the lower foliage as small, pale, or yellow-green spots. As the infection advances, these spots turn brown or necrotic, while the underside of the leaf develops a dense, velvety, olive-to-brown growth. Severe infections lead to premature leaf drop, reduced plant vigor, and significant stress on the fruit-bearing capacity of the crop.
Favorable conditions for the development of the disease include high relative humidity (above 80%) and moderate temperatures. Because the spores are capable of surviving for long periods in soil and on debris, sanitation is a critical aspect of disease management. Overcrowding of plants and lack of proper air circulation are key factors that accelerate the rapid spread of the fungus.
The economic impact of the disease is substantial due to the reduction in photosynthesis and subsequent yield loss. Management strategies focus on both prevention and control:
- Maintaining low humidity levels through proper ventilation.
- Removing and destroying infected plant debris.
- Using resistant varieties when available.
- Applying recommended fungicides as part of an integrated pest management program.
